DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO WOULD ENJOY THE NewsFEATHER?
Please forward the NewsFEATHER to a friend, a family member, or a curious kid! There's no cost to subscribe, and we are growing fast!
COMING SOON!
A Kid's Page for the website is in development, along with an expanded fun page for grownups, articles, and our favorite books here at the studio!
Remember: The NewsFEATHER has one aim: to use the gift of art-making to nourish that most fundamental of connections -- the bond between ourselves and the created world. Each issue will contain a mixture of new images from my camera or brush; new developments at the Snowbird Arts studio; quotes, references, links and resources for connecting with the natural riches at our doorsteps, and the inner wealth of our own creative processes. We are oh, so thrilled to tell you what's been happening in the past few weeks.

Our Wildlife Photo Gallery Opens!

After languishing for several weeks with its tempting (but non-functional!) photo indexes gracing the gallery's front door, the wildlife photo gallery is now ready for prime time!
Please click here to begin your cyber stroll through our best wildlife images.
We are in the process of developing articles and links for each species in our gallery, and these will be added bit by bit.

The Weblog Loves Its New Home!
Typepad has proved to be an extra nice place to informally share with the studio's friends. We've been so tickled at the dear comments people have left. Now that the Gallery is properly built, I'm looking forward to more frequent visits to the weblog myself! LV
Please stop by to say hello. It is so wonderful to hear from friends, especially on these steamy summer days along Owl Creek.
EXTRA!! BABY QUAIL HATCH! Congratulations to Our Proud New Parents, Pearl and Rooster!

THIS IS PEARL IN HER 4" FLOWERPOT, WITH "LIGHT CHICK" PEEKING OUT
[our apologies for the low quality photo -- we were very anxious to include a 'baby picture' at press time]
Against all odds, our pretty and intrepid Pearl has hatched two gem-like little baby Button Quail just this morning! This baby is only hours old. The entire chick is no bigger than a marble, and the head that is peeking at you is about the size of the eraser on the end of a pencil. Since both the quail and I are new at this, we decided to let Pearl brood only two eggs, fully expecting that this first time would be a bust. But here we have two jewel-sized chicks! For the time being, we have designated them "Light Chick" and "Dark Chick", since we would rather wait until their gender is apparent to name them. Light Chick is stripey, like a red chicken baby, with pink feet and a pink beak. Dark Chick is very dark brown, with only the faintest stripe on the head, black feet, and a black beak.
I'm afraid we agitated everyone in the terrarium this morning as we replaced the bedding with paper towels -- better footing for the babies, and less confusion over what is bedding and what is food! Rooster has been an outstanding daddy bird, very protective and brave -- but we did separate him temporarily when his paternal enthusiasm caused him to peck the babies into their hiding places, for their own good, of course.
This is Pearl's first hatch, and we are so proud of her. LV

FROM JEANNIE, in AZ:
"The visual and descriptive verbal reminders of the beauty and mysterious activity of the earth after a rainfall, and the qualities of changes during the seasons when it is time to harvest the wheat, or the birthing of the next generation of animals that walk here with us, has been a necessary and beautiful reminder of where I live."
